Buying Home Furniture: Rules to Follow
If you plan to buy furniture for your home, the following rules will help you in your choice in order to buy the appropriate ones.
The first rule
Ask yourself how long you plan to keep the furniture. Some people choose to buy the cheaper ones especially if they are moving into a small abode. Their reason is the problem of moving furniture when they decided to move house again. This may be true; however, you get to spend more doing this method. Buying furniture that is more stable and elegant would actually save your more although they can be a little expensive.
Online furniture stores are your best bet for good, quality furniture. They also sell these items at a cheaper price compared to your local stores, as they do not have to incur big operating expenses.
You can also opt to buy furniture that is multi-functional. Modern and contemporary furniture are created to serve more than one function. Take for instance a coffee table. Modern coffee tables are designed not just for serving but they were equipped with storage compartments. This is the same with modern sofas that have built-in lights and storage. Some sofas have one back cushion that can serve as a mini table when it is turned over.
Even bedroom furniture was made to be useful. Most modern beds are equipped with underneath drawers.
If your problem is transporting the furniture in the event that you move house, you can do any of the following options:
Keep the furniture if you are moving nearby
Sell the furniture
Donate the furniture to charitable institutions
Leave it to be used by the next occupant
The second rule
Take the dimension of the rooms, doors and the stairs. If you are moving to a condominium, include the elevators. It would be good if you can get hold of the floor plan, as this includes the precise measurements of the whole house.
The third rule.
Set a budget. Sometimes the down payment, the first month’s rent and utilities can deplete your budget leaving only a small amount for your furniture.
Alternatively, if you are really short of budget, you can try the following:
You can check if you have some relatives living near the area. They might have some furniture pieces that they no longer need but are still good. They may even give it to you for free, which could save you more on furniture expense. Hence, your only expense is in getting a van to transport them.
Check on the streets. Some homeowners just leave pieces of furniture on the street if they do not need it anymore. This is especially true if they do not have the time to have a garage sale. Furniture that you find on the street is fine provided you give them a good cleaning by using a disinfectant. However, avoid buying upholstered furniture, as they might have bugs in them.
Check on second-hand stores. They normally have goods that are in good condition. Some even looked new since they were used for only a matter of months. Again, you have to hire a van in transporting them.
